NASDAQ Futures are up 19 with +25 Fair Value, Dow Futures are up 34 on this Thursday with a busy economic schedule. Futures have seen a pretty extreme range of significantly up last night, down harshly in the early morning and back to green as we approach the open.
Asian markets closed substantially lower again today. Hong Kong closed down 1.7%, Japan dropped 2.43% and China led the decline, down 3.23%. On the other hand, European markets are higher, apparently on the ECB rate decision. The UK is currently up 1.08%, France is up 1.18% and Germany is leading, up 1.32%.
Commodities are mostly up this morning. Oil is down 0.85%, natural gas is up 0.52% and gold is down 0.74%. Unleaded gas is down 0.95% and heating oil is down 3.16%. Metals are mixed with gold and silver down, platinum and copper up. Meat is up. Coffee, cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat are up while cocoa is down.
The ECB keeps interest rates and its quantitative easing program unchanged. Oil prices fall near 2003 lows on oversupply and demand worries. Jobless Claims in US increased to a 6-month high last week.
F5 Networks (FFIV) reported earnings yesterday and is currently up over 2%. Logitech International (LOGI) is up nearly 9% in pre-market. Verizon (VZ) announced earnings this morning and is up nearly 1% on an earnings beat by 1 cent. Southwest Airlines (LUV) also reported this morning and is up 1-2% on meeting Q4 earnings but a revenue miss.
Earnings season continues this afternoon after the bell with American Express (AXP), E*TRADE Financial (ETFC), Starbucks (SBUX) and Schlumberger (SLB).
Tomorrow morning before the bell, Citizens Financial (CFG), General Electric (GE) and Legg Mason (LM) are expected to report.
AAPL saw a big scary dip yesterday, compressing down as low as 93.42 and then "springing" back to over 98, ultimately winding up in the green by 0.13% for the day. AAPL opened at 95.10 to very high volume and immediately struggled to hold 95. By 10:30am AAPL had "mini-crashed" to 94 on high volume and hit an intra-day low of 93.42 minutes after. After 11am AAPL broke from the depths and reversed course, quickly bouncing back up to claim 94, then capturing 95 again in early afternoon before gaining 96 shortly before 3pm and then blasting up through 97 to 98, to a high of 98.19, all on impressively sustained high volume. AAPL settled back a bit the last 30 minutes of the day, ending up 13 cents at 96.79. After-hours saw additional gains of 0.44, putting AAPL at 97.23.
This morning in pre-market, AAPL opened up lower in conjunction with Futures and spent most of the morning battling with 96, periodically seeing lows in the mid-95 area. Later in the morning AAPL broke free from 96 and took 97 with a high of 97.61 at 8:37am. AAPL is currently up 12 cents at 96.95. I should note that the pre-market low today is 91.02 at 4am this morning - this, folks, is a good example of why you never use market orders outside of intra-day.
Classic max-pain is 97.
