Apple Today 4/28/2017 OPEX (AAPL)

Good Morning,

S&P Futures are up 1 with +3 Fair Value, NASDAQ Futures are down 4 with +48 Fair Value (rare) and Dow Futures are up 20 on this OPEX to end an action-packed week. Earnings reports delivered a number of home-runs - including Google and Amazon. However, Bidu and Starbucks didn't fare as well. Techwise, Apple has been spotted testing technology in a self-driving Lexus RX in Silicon Valley today. Bitcoin surged to a new all-time high of 1,331, capping a run of more than 20% in April alone.

This morning's Economic Calendar includes: GDP Q1, Employment Cost Index, Chicago PMI and Consumer Sentiment followed by Baker-Hughes Rig Count this afternoon.

The earnings winners are: The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS), up nearly 5.5%, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL), up over 5.5%, Alphabet Inc. (GOOG), up over 3.5%, UBS Group AG (UBS) up nearly 3.5% and Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), up over 3%.

On the other hand, AthenaHealth, Inc. (ATHN) is down over 16%, Synchrony Financial (SYF) is down over 13.5%, Barclays PLC (BCS) is down over 4.5%, Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) is down nearly 3.5% and Intel Corporation (INTC) is down nearly 2.5%.

Futures were down in early morning, scraped lows just before 3:30am, then moved up sharply after 4am to peak around 7:30am and are off the highs as we approach the open.

Asian markets ended mostly down. China went up 0.08%, Hong Kong dropped 0.34% and Japan went down 0.29%. European markets are mixed. The UK is down 0.38%, Germany is up 0.02% and France is up 0.11%.

Commodities are mixed this morning. Oil is up 1.16%, natural gas is up 0.43% and gold is up 0.21%. Unleaded gas is up 1.89% and heating oil is up 0.70%. Metals are mostly up except silver. Meats are up strong. Cocoa and wheat are up while coffee, cotton, corn and soybeans are down.

US Q1 growth weakest in 3 years as consumer spending falters.

AthenaHealth, Inc. (ATHN) reported Q1 results yesterday afternoon with adjusted earnings of 32 cents per share that missed expectations and is down over 16% in pre-market. Pixelworks, Inc. (PXLW) announced Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share and has yet to react. Expedia, Inc. (EXPE) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 5 cents per share that missed expectations and is down nearly 2%. Columbia Sportswear Company (COLM) announced Q1 results with profit of 51 cents per share that beat expectations and has yet to react. VeriSign, Inc. (VRSN) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 96 cents per share that beat expectations and has yet to react. Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) announced Q1 results with earnings of 66 cents per share but lowers guidance and is down over 2%. Intel Corporation (INTC) reported Q1 results with earnings of 66 cents per share that missed expectations and is down nearly 2.5%. Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) announced Q1 results that beat expectations and is up over 3.5%. Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) reported Q3 results with earnings of 73 cents per share that beat expectations and is up nearly 0.5%. Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) announced Q2 results with earnings of 45 cents per share that met expectations but lower guidance and is down nearly 3.5%. Aflac Incorporated (AFL) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of $1.67 per share that beat expectations and has yet to react. Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (VRTX) announced Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 41 cents per share that beat expectations and is up over 2%. Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (CY) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 13 cents per share that beat expectations and is up over 2%. Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) announced Q1 results that beat expectations and is up over 3%. Skyworks Solutions, Inc. (SWKS) reported Q2 results with adjusted earnings of $1.45 per share that beat expectations and is down nearly 1.5%. Western Digital Corporation (WDC) announced Q3 results with adjusted earnings of $2.39 per share that beat expectations and is up nearly 7%.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (GT) reported Q1 results this morning with adjusted earnings of 74 cents per share that beat expectations and is down over 0.5% in pre-market. Spirit Airlines (SAVE) announced Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 51 cents per share and has yet to react. Thomson Reuters Corporation (TRI) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 63 cents per share and is up over 2.5%. Dun & Bradstreet Corp. (DNB) announced Q1 results that missed estimates and has yet to react. General Motors Company (GM) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of $1.70 per share that beat expectations and is up nearly 1.5%. Synchrony Financial (SYF) announced Q1 results with net income of 61 cents that missed expectations and is down over 13.5%. Barclays PLC (BCS) reported Q1 results that missed expectations and is down over 4.5%. Chevron Corporation (CVX) announced Q1 results that beat expectations on higher oil prices and is up nearly 2%. Phillips 66 (PSX) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 56 cents per share that beat expectations and is up over 1%. The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc (RBS) announced Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 18 cents per share that beat expectations and is up nearly 5.5%. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) reported Q1 results with net income of 99 cents per share that beat expectations and is up over 5.5% Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) announced Q1 results with more than double profit on higher oil prices that beat expectations and is up over 1.5%. UBS Group AG (UBS) reported Q1 results with adjusted earnings of 38 cents per share that beat expectations and is up nearly 3.5%.

On Monday morning before the open, look out for earnings from Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. (DO) and Loews Corporation (L).

AAPL bounced back from mid-143, ending up 0.08% on low volume. AAPL opened up at 143.92 to high volume and quickly set an intra-day high of 144.16 at 9:32am on strong volume before sharply slipping to an intra-day low of 143.31 at 10:30 on moderate volume. AAPL bounced back and climbed back up to the upper 143-area by the end of lunchtime on low volume and remained in a nervous range around 143.75 for the remainer of the day on low volume with a slight boost into the close on high volume. AAPL ended the day up 11 cents at 143.79 and gained 8 more cents in after-hours to 143.87.

This morning in pre-market, AAPL opened higher in sympathy with Nasdaq and tech earnings and hit a pre-market high of 144.05 before settling slightly. AAPL is currently up 6 cents at 143.85 as we approach the open.
